Because the Flathead boasts some of the best soil in the world, agriculture has been instrumental in the development of the valley.  Naturally, the most common landmarks are beautiful barns, from faded to lipstick red.  Northwestern Montana can also have some serious winter weather, with strong winds blowing across the lower valley.  Fortunate is the stock that can find shelter in one of these barns, the mow overhead stuffed with hay from the fields.
