Notes from the artist: The grain elevator sat beside the railroad tracks at Perma. As in many spots on the Montana map, the few small buildings and elevator were named for the rail siding. As I drove by the tall structure, I thought, "next time by, I'll bring a camera". The following year, as I was nearing Perma, my camera was in the seat beside me. The familiar landmark was gone, the the boards piled in a neat stack beside the tracks. How sad. Years later, I met a gentleman who asked why I hadn't drawn the Perma elevator. I told him the story, and he said he had photographed it. Usually, I never work from a reference photo I haven't taken, but this was a stroke of luck. Using my memory, details from the photo, and a change of seasons, I drew this etching.
