 "Square Butte"

Notes from the Artist:

The Milwaukee Land Company laid out the neat, tree-lined streets of Square Butte in 1913.  Strategically located along the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific's route between Lewistown and Great Falls, Square Butte was for a time an important stop because it offered an abundant supply of mineral-free water and coal for the locomotives.  With the decrease in the need for those materials, there was a corresponding shrinkage of the town.  The sturdiest building still standing is the little square jail, built of a local granite. The last owners of the jail donated it to the Geraldine Historical Committee in 1997, whose plaque provided the information for this note. Sorry, I don't know the make and year of the antique tractor.

This butte is one of several prominent plateaus in central Montana.  The tops are important islands of what was once the great prairie, the steep sides preventing encroachment by man.
