"Paul's Pride "

Notes from the Artist

The Whiteface Ranch in East Helena, Montana, was built by William C. Child in the late 1880’s, after the severe winter of 1885-86 when most of the cattle starved on the open range. He decided to build a barn large enough to hold 500 head of cattle during the storms that could rage across Montana. The 8 room octagon house boasts a second floor ball room. The house was never meant to be a home, but a place to entertain guests for week-end parties, since Child lived in a mansion in Helena.

The ranch passed through many owners during the next 60 years. It became neglected and run down. Paul Kleffner and his wife Thelma bought the place in 1943 and spent the next half century fixing it up and raising their family on that beautiful spot. I met Paul after I called to ask permission to make an etching of it. He escorted me around the ranch, beaming with pride as he showed his incredible accomplishment of restoring the old place and giving it new life. Now it is a gathering place for weddings, reunions, and many other functions that fill the barn and meadows with joy.
