"The Pony School"

Notes from the Artist

In 1867, a miner from nearby Alder Gulch struck color in the Tobacco Root mountains.  Tecumseh "Pony" Smith began placer mining and a camp soon grew. As the placer mining died out, a miner named George Moreland discovered a rich, hardrock deposit in Pony Creek, and the little town was off and running again.  By 1877, it included a hotel, livery stable, store and shoe shop. Pony underwent a period of growth in wealth and population.

Information was courtesty of the second edition of Pony, Montana-a Golden Past, Still a Treasure,  published by the Pony Homecoming Club.

When school opened in 1900, the record enrollment promted the building of a new brick school which was open for students in 1903.  The school was in use until the 1950's and on its closure, the townspeople worried it would fall into disrepair.  They formed the Pony Homecoming Club.  To this day it has taken care of and provided the community with this great facility, as well as the gymnasium to the north and the old Presbyterian Church.  Thanks to all of you for your hard work.
