"Shoe'n Shop "

Notes from the Artist

Virginia City, Montana, was in the largest of several mining districts in the Alder Gulch gold strike of 1863. The town grew rapidly for a few years, then expansion stabilized in 1875. Gold fever had either made the miners wealthy, or left them with empty “pokes” and the need to move on to seek their fortunes elsewhere. Sadly, Virginia City fell into 70 years of decline.

The blacksmith shop started as a small log cabin, soon restructured into a bar and dance hall with the typical false front. By 1878, it was converted into the Sauerbier blacksmith shop. As with many of the Alder Gulch buildings, the blacksmith shop was purchased and preserved by C.A. Bovey in the late 1940’s. The little town of Virginia City still boasts a lively population which cohabits comfortably with the spirits of the  past
