"Special Delivery "

Notes from the Artist

Bannack was established during the territorial gold rush of 1862, and its story is one of the wildest sagas in Montana history. The sheriff was in league with a gang of highwaymen. During their short reign of terror, these desperadoes were credited with the murder of more than one hundred men. Vigilante justice took a hand in halting these renegades when thirty-one of the gang members were captured and hung.

This hand-hewn log cabin was home to early physician, Dr. Ryburn. The old delivery truck has been retired many years. Both the doctor and the truck were probably responsible for many “special deliveries”.

In 1965, my husband’s Uncle Claude introduced me to the ghost town which Bannack had become. It has been a great joy to follow the preservation of this historical gem. It is now a state park, open for the education and pleasure of all.
